Orofacial myofunctional therapy addresses orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs). These disorders involve dysfunction of the muscles of the mouth, face and neck. An orofacial myofunctional therapy program is aimed at restoring proper function of these muscles, using exercises and other supportive modalities. Once your health goals are identified, I will work to help you attain those goals with an individualized program. The exercises and recommendations in the program will aid in achieving improved nasal breathing, lip seal, tongue posture and proper swallowing. These 4 goals will serve as a guideline toward improved craniofacial growth and development, improved sleep, improved posture, healthier breathing, and many other benefits. We will work together in a team approach, which will include you the client, myself, and any other specialists that may be necessary for a successful outcome.
Thumb or finger sucking can potentially create oral problems such as mouth breathing, an unhealthy bite and/or misaligned teeth, improper growth of the palate/jaw, speech problems, and airway issues and improper swallowing patterns. Nail biting and chewing habits can also be detrimental to the health of the teeth and overall oral development. Using myofunctional exercises and positive reinforcement, this program addresses eliminating the habit from the root cause, and has proven to be highly effective.
