Orofacial myofunctional therapy addresses orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) or dysfunctions related to the muscles of the face and mouth. Programs are designed to help correct these dysfunctions by retraining the muscles through guided exercises. The goals of these exercises are increased nasal breathing, improved tongue posture, improved lip seal, and proper swallowing patterns.
A successful orofacial myofunctional therapy program will include sessions in which a client is given exercises to improve the function of the muscles of the mouth, face and neck. Typically, 10-15 sessions are recommended to create new neuromuscular pathways. Sessions are usually 1-2 weeks apart. At these sessions, I give instructions for exercises that are specific to goals we have set to improve and correct particular OMDs and dysfunctions. These exercises will be practiced at home, and only take about 5 minutes, twice per day. Other time may be required at home to complete additional recommendations, but it is minimal. Clients will be continuously evaluated for compensations. They will be guided in the specific direction needed to improve their orofacial function. Everyone is different, so it is not "one program fits all". If needed, we will work with specialists such as ENTs, sleep specialists, oral surgeons, orthodontists, general dentists, body workers, or occupational therapists to enhance the outcomes of the program.
If you are an adult who mouth breathes or if your tongue rests low in your mouth, chances are you have trouble sleeping, breathing or have tension in your jaw and/or neck. You may also have issues with periodontal disease, cavities, and/or a change in the position of your teeth (crowding). Children who breathe through their mouths and have a low resting tongue may have similar issues. With children, however, conditions such as sleep apnea and orthodontic relapse may be prevented by addressing these disorders earlier in life. Breathing through your mouth and a low resting tongue are two of the major signs that orofacial myofunctional therapy could help you. A comprehensive evaluation is the best way to determine which dysfunctions are present, and how a program can help.
